Teague Mayfield
My name is Teague, and my story is one of second chances, resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of a lifelong dream.
I am 53 years old and I currently live in San Mateo, California, with my wife and daughter. I've always felt drawn to the vastness and power of the ocean. From a young age, being near the water has been my sanctuary, a place where I find peace and joy. And like so many, I've dreamed of owning a sailboat and experiencing the freedom of the open sea.
In late November 2023, during what should have been a time of celebration, my life took an unexpected and terrifying turn. I became acutely ill, and within hours, I was admitted to Stanford Hospital. What followed was a whirlwind of confusion, fading consciousness, and ultimately, a coma. I had contracted severe Hepatitis A, and my liver was failing rapidly.
The medical team fought tirelessly, however in a matter of 12 days, my liver continued to deteriorate. The doctors delivered the devastating news to my wife: without a liver transplant, I wouldn't survive another day. They advised her to gather loved ones for a final farewell.
Then, in what can only be described as a miracle, a liver became available that very afternoon. I was rushed into surgery that evening, embarking on a grueling 14-hour procedure. When I awoke the next day, it was to the incredible news that I had a new liver and a second chance at life.
The road to recovery was long and arduous. I spent weeks in the hospital, including Christmas, relearning how to talk, move, and even eat. Dialysis became a daily routine, and I faced the daunting task of rebuilding my strength at a rehabilitation facility.
Today, I've made a complete recovery and am eager to move forward. My medical team is astounded by my progress, and I am eternally grateful for the gift I have received. While I don't know the identity of the selfless individual whose liver saved my life, I carry their legacy with me every day.
This experience has irrevocably changed me. It has underscored the preciousness and fragility of life, and it has ignited a fire within me to pursue my dreams with unwavering determination. I can no longer afford to wait for "someday."
And that, my friends, is why I'm setting sail. Through this journey, I aim to show that even after facing a life-threatening illness, it's possible to reclaim your passions and inspire others to pursue their own dreams, no matter what obstacles stand in their way.
